Queensland Police in Australia have released previously unseen photographs from their investigation into the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio. This tragic incident took place 25 years ago, on July 14, 2001, along a remote stretch of highway near Barrow Creek, a small town about 300 kilometers north of Alice Springs. Falconio was shot, and sadly, his body has never been found. Authorities believe these new images might help gather more leads about the case, which remains unsolved. The killer, Bradley Murdoch, who was 67 years old when he died of cancer last year in prison, never revealed the location of Falconio's remains. Among the released photos, one shows Murdoch staring at a police camera during the investigation, which might remind witnesses of the incident. Falconio's girlfriend, Joanne Lees, remarkably escaped from Murdoch after the attack and hid in the scrub for hours. She finally found help when she waved down two men driving a truck. Other images show her showing signs of trauma and injuries, including where her wrists were bound with cable ties.
Senior officers hope that by releasing these images, they could bring answers for Falconio's family. Commissioner Martin Dole stated that this anniversary is significant and meant to highlight the need for closure. He emphasized that even though a murderer has been held accountable, the case will remain open until they find Peter’s remains. Pictures of the couple’s abandoned orange Volkswagen Kombi van, found near the attack site, were also included in the release. This case highlights the importance of justice in violent crimes. If anyone has information, a reward of up to A$500,000 is being offered for tips that lead to the discovery of Falconio's remains.
